Do Audiobooks Count as Reading? What the Evidence Says

You finish an audiobook on the drive home. The last line lands, and a small doubt arrives right behind it. When you mention the book to a friend, you hear yourself edit the verb: listened to it. Almost an apology.

So, do audiobooks count as reading? Researchers have tested the question directly for decades, with controlled comparisons and meta-analyses rather than opinion polls. The answer has three parts. On prose, listening and reading produce equivalent comprehension. On dense, technical, or spatially structured material, listening falls behind. And the guilt is cultural, not scientific.

Audiobooks vs. reading comprehension: what 46 studies found

Start with the strongest evidence. A meta-analysis by Virginia Clinton-Lisell, published in the Review of Educational Research, pooled 46 studies conducted between 1955 and 2020, covering 4,687 child and adult participants. When the same texts were read versus listened to, levels of understanding did not differ significantly (Phys.org).

Single studies point the same direction. In 2016, Beth Rogowsky, an education professor at Bloomsburg University, randomly assigned adults to listen to sections of Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken, read the same sections on an e-reader, or do both simultaneously. On the follow-up quiz, the groups were indistinguishable. In Time's coverage of the study, she put it plainly: "We found no significant differences in comprehension between reading, listening, or reading and listening simultaneously."

Time's coverage flagged one caveat: the reading condition used e-readers rather than print books. That is a real limitation, and a narrow one. The meta-analysis spans dozens of studies across formats and arrives at the same place.

Why does parity happen? In skilled readers, decoding, the work of converting printed words into language, is automatized. It costs almost nothing. Comprehension is then limited by language processing itself: turning sentences into meaning. That bottleneck sits downstream of both eye and ear. Once decoding is automatic, the delivery channel stops mattering.

Listening and reading share overlapping brain networks

Behavioral scores have a neural counterpart. Nadine Gaab, a cognitive neuroscientist at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, describes the brain networks for written and oral language as deeply intertwined and largely overlapping. "There isn't much of a difference between the brain network for reading and the brain network for language comprehension," she told the Harvard Gazette.

One region does differ. The visual "letter box" area that processes written words is less engaged while listening. Even that is not absolute: in some people it still activates, because they visualize the words as they hear them.

Imaging studies extend the point across ages. Berl and colleagues in 2010 found that children ages 7 to 12 recruit overlapping frontotemporal networks, sometimes called the "comprehension cortex," whether a story arrives by eye or by ear. Deniz and colleagues in 2019 found the same shared engagement in adults (Phys.org). For a fluent reader, comprehension runs on the same machinery in both modalities. Only the entrance changes.

Where listening falls short: dense, technical, and spatial material

Parity on prose is not parity everywhere. Listening reliably underperforms on dense expository and technical material, on math- and diagram-heavy passages, and on anything spatially structured: tables, code, charts, footnotes, multi-step arguments.

The mechanism is mechanical. Reading includes backtracking: quick regressive eye movements that re-check words and phrases, woven so tightly into sentence processing that readers rarely notice them. Narration is linear. A listener cannot backtrack the way an eye instinctively does, and a single pass at narrator speed is the only pass you get.

Print also carries navigation affordances that narration removes: skimming, scanning headings, jumping ahead to a figure or a footnote. On a page, re-reading is a two-second action. In audio, it is a scrub bar.

The rule of thumb: any text that rewards re-reading punishes a single pass of narration.

The multitasking trap: divided attention, not audio

Here is where lived experience and lab evidence seem to disagree. People report that audiobooks do not stick. The studies keep finding parity. Both can be true.

Most real-world listening happens while driving, walking, or doing chores, and secondary-task load plus mind-wandering measurably reduce comprehension. The parity findings come from quiet, single-task comparisons, where nothing competes for attention. Under divided attention, parity shows up far less often.

So when a book fails to stick, the usual culprit is not audio. It is attention. The practical split follows directly: reserve demanding listens for undivided time, and save complex material for the page. Why audiobook guilt exists anyway: status, not science

If the evidence is this consistent, where does the guilt come from? Not from the data. It comes from a print-centric literacy hierarchy that codes oral formats as passive or remedial: listening is what you do when you cannot yet read. That hierarchy also inverts the developmental record. Listening comprehension precedes and predicts reading comprehension; children process spoken language years before they decode print. Oral language is not the degraded form of reading. It is the foundation print is built on.

There is one legitimate difference. Print builds decoding and orthographic knowledge, the visual shape and spelling of words, and audio cannot. For developing readers and struggling readers, that difference matters. For fluent adults, it is largely moot. Format choice should follow the material and your attention, not status anxiety.

Prior knowledge beats modality

Some experiments do find a modest advantage for reading: slightly better immediate or detail recall on expository text. The effect is real, and it closes quickly. Note-taking shrinks it. Slower narration shrinks it. High prior knowledge of the topic erases it.

That last variable deserves the emphasis. Across listening vs. reading research, prior topic knowledge is consistently a stronger predictor of comprehension and retention than modality is. A reader who knows the field retains more from an audiobook than a newcomer retains from print.

The levers you control are familiar: take notes, slow the narrator down, build context before a hard listen. Pairing narration with text: pacing is the active ingredient

Since listening and reading converge on prose, doing both at once should be best. The evidence says: not really.

Clinton-Lisell's 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of reading-while-listening pooled 30 studies with 1,945 participants. Compared with reading alone, following the narration on screen produced only a trivial overall comprehension benefit (g = .18, p = .01). The subgroups carry the story. The benefit appeared only in experimenter-paced conditions, where an external pacer set the reading speed (g = 0.41). When readers controlled their own pace, there was no reliable effect (g = 0.06, p = .34) (the meta-analysis itself).

That inversion matters. External pacing, not audio per se, appears to be the active ingredient in dual-format gains. Narration that pulls your eyes along keeps attention and text aligned; audio playing in the background adds nothing. Two groups may still benefit from audio-assisted reading, struggling readers and second-language learners building vocabulary, but too few studies exist to generalize. The verdict: are audiobooks as good as reading?
